You know your business. You’re a professional contractor.

Selecting the right lead generation partner is an important part of your business. But it’s not something you do every day.

Most successful contractors go through a lot of different lead providers. Some are successful, and many are not.

But how do you know which one is the right fit for your particular business?

Here’s a quick cheat sheet of the 4 types of lead providers:

The National Listing Service (HomeAdvisor, Angi, Quinn Street, etc..)

Pros: Lots of Volume Available. Most contractors use one of these services at some point in their business cycle. They offer good deals to get started and they can get you leads quickly.

Cons: Leads are shared with 4+ contractors, unless you pay a lot extra. The homeowners feel beat up by calls from multiple contractors and are often hard to sell.

The Generalist Marketing Agency.

Pros: Understand where leads fit in your marketing plan, understand your business model and what you need to fuel your business.

Cons: Don’t do lead gen every day – they are mostly focused on things like branding, website development, and media campaigns.

The Mad Scientist

Pros: Has a “secret sauce” that he uses to get people to sign forms or click buttons online

Cons: Often so focused on “winning the lead” that the leads themselves lack intent or feel they were tricked into signing up for something (lottery, government program, “free stuff”). You often have to work through a lot of bad leads to find a few good opportunities.

The Professional

Pros: All they do is source leads with high intent. They understand the exact needs of their clients and the market. Yes they have technology behind them but the focus is on generating quality leads with intent through marketing to people’s needs – not by using gimmicks to trick them into giving up their contact info.

Cons: Expense and availability. Good leads are expensive and there are only so many good leads with an actual need for your services.

Questions you need to ask each lead provider you talk to (and yourself) to see if it’s the right fit-

  • How well does this provider understand my industry and how I run my business?
  • Do they provide the quality of leads my sales team needs to be successful?
  • Can they provide me with high intent leads with a good ROI?
  • Are they easy to deal with and provide great customer service?
  • Do they care as much about my business as they do their bottom line?
